Our Wii 2 feature wish list

Console life cycles historically have lasted around five to six years. While Sony and Microsoft seem to be deviating from that pattern, Nintendo has stuck with tradition by fully disclosing that a brand-new home console will be unveiled at next week's E3 2011.

There has been a lot of speculation about what kind of horsepower this Wii successor will bring, with early reports claiming the hardware will trump both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Of course, there won't be any solid answers until the company's press conference on Tuesday morning, but for now, CNET's gaming experts … Read more

In 50 million photos, why all the winter?

ScanCafe, a company that digitizes slides, prints, and negatives, has crossed the threshold of 50 million photos scanned.

That's a lot of photos, though the company likes to point out there are something like 550 billion more, by one estimate, that it views as in danger. "We've got to preserve many more, before they are lost forever," said CEO Sam Allen in a statement.

It's debatable whether digital copies of photos will outlast analog ones, of course. Multiple identical copies of digital images can easily be stored in different locations, protecting against fires, theft, chemical … Read more

Next Aston Martin will be a luxury subcompact

Aston Martin made official what many industry watchers had already assumed; that it will be begin producing the tiny-but-luxurious Cygnet in 2011.

The Cygnet is a rebadged Toyota iQ equipped with the same 97hp 1.3-liter engine but outfitted with a high-end, sartorial interior that's been enveloped with hand-stitched leather. News sources are pegging the Cygnet with a price tag somewhere between $45,000 to $75,000, according to InsideLine.

It's a drastic break from Aston Martin's current line up of performance cars, but adding a fuel-sipper will help the British carmaker comply with tightening European emissions … Read more

The 404 668: Where we like our Grizzly Bear Eggs over easy (podcast)

Congratulations to frequent guest and friend of the show Clayton Morris for reaching 100 episodes of his own podcast, The Grizzly Bear Egg Cafe!

Clayton joins us on The 404 this morning to chat about podcasting, backyard wrestling, and the tornado that hit New York last night!

We invited our buddy Clayton Morris of Fox and Friends to help us celebrate our 404th episode, so we're returning the favor for the 100th episode of The Grizzly Bear Egg Cafe, a podcast he does with Chikara founder and pro-wrestler Mike Quackenbush.

Girl Scout Weekly describes the show as "an omnibus podcast of pop culture, news, and tales from two rather odd lifestyles..." and Clayton tells us the origin of the name, because bears apparently do not lay eggs, which is news to all of us.

To celebrate his 100th episode, Wilson also cooked up a brand new logo for the show with a semi-embarrassing story to go along with it- apparently it's kind of difficult to purchase a single egg in New York City! We're also chatting with Clayton about the ins and outs of running a successful podcast and he even gives us a preview of some of GBEC's upcoming guests that include veteran artist Stan Bush and David Byrne from The Talking Heads!

Finally, join us after the break for Calls From the Public which features an appearance by one of our new favorite callers that sounds like the bastard child of Bill Cosby and Harry Caray.

There's also another voicemail ripping into yours truly for missing out on Shawshank Redemption, but I'd rather watch stuff like this anyway. Thanks to Clayton for waking up early to Skype with us this morning, and look for his physical being on a very-near-future episode of The 404! Have a great weekend everyone!

An amazing video clip aired by a TV news station in Hawaii (and which we first showed you on this week's Digital City podcast) shows the PC-game-playing patrons of a local Internet cafe fighting back against a gang of bandanna-wearing thugs intent on robbing them. According to the blow-by-blow description from KHON2 News:

It is just before midnight on Wednesday. Devin Wolery is sitting at the counter at PC Gamerz in Kaneohe watching over his nine customers when two masked men walk in...Video surveillance shows him reaching to push a panic button to alert police when things escalate. &… Read more

ScanCafe to raise prices, improve Web interface

The good news: ScanCafe, a photo digitization service that relies on relatively inexpensive workers in India for the labor-intensive task, said it will soon start beta-testing a process that makes it easier for customers to review scans online.

The bad news: ScanCafe is raising some of its prices on May 10.

CEO Sam Allen announced the move in a message to customers Thursday. "We wanted to get the news to you as soon as we could, in case you had a large scanning project you wanted to get started on," he said. Allen didn't detail which prices … Read more

For new CAFE, automakers place high-stakes tech bets

Game-changing 2015 fuel economy rules are forcing vehicle development teams to make high-stakes bets on expensive technologies--bets that will separate the winners from the also-rans.

Not only do federal rules target a 2015 fleet average of 35.5 mpg, up from the current 27.5 mpg for cars and 23.1 mpg for light trucks, but also they force automakers to bet on different technology packages for each vehicle segment. Companies that do best at mixing technologies while keeping down costs will have an advantage when buyers wince at higher stickers.

It's a much more complex game than in the past. Here's why:

Each size category of vehicle--"footprint," in federal jargon--will have its own miles per gallon bogey. That means that even shrimpy little compacts will get systems such as dual-clutch transmissions and variable valve timing. That could add $1,800 to the sticker. Many big pickups, meanwhile, will need diesel engines to get acceptable fuel economy while maintaining hauling and payload specs. Chalk up $8,000 or more for that.Nizar Trigui, director of vehicle energy management engineering for Ford Motors, says the footprint rule will require automakers to develop the right technology package for each segment. Trigui adds: "Technology is not generic. It is very specific for the different segments."

Every automaker will have its own corporate average fuel economy requirement, sales-weighted by footprint. That last bit may sound like technical jargon, but it turns CAFE strategies upside down.In the past, automakers could pump out stripped-down econoboxes to balance out big, gas-guzzling trucks. Not anymore. The more small cars they sell, the higher their CAFE number rises.… Read more
