Last week I hinted that I would make my following week's blogging theme about navigation systems, partially inspired by the kickass navigation system installed in the 2009 Mini Cooper (or should I say Cooper Mini to annoy all you car snobs out there). Pioneer's AVIC Z-Series has set the standard for in-dash navigation devices over the past couple of years, and so the release of a new line of a new family of products in the AVIC series is big news for car tech fans. The line-up starts with the entry-level AVIC-F700BT, which features a single CD/CD-R/RW playback mechanism, followed by the AVIC-F900BT and the AVIC-F90BT, which are both capable of reading MP3, WMA, iTunes AAC, and WAV audio formats as well as DVD, DivX, and MPEG4 video files.

Pioneer used the first morning of press conferences here at CES 2008 to unveil the latest in its range of AVIC in-car navigation devices. The touch-screen AVIC-F500BT dubbefd "LINC" by Pioneers engineers, follows the recent in-car "hybrid" trend of combining the flexibility of a portable navigation device with the audio integration of an in-dash system, while providing some innovative voice-recognition capabilities. With this year's SEMA show fast approaching, aftermarket car-tech manufacturers are starting to release details on the next generation of their in-car gadgetry. This week, Pioneer unveiled the latest addition to its AVIC series of all-in-one in-car navigation and media devices, the single-DIN-size AVIC-N4. Like the AVIC-Z1 and AVIC-D3 systems, the N4 features a 7-inch touch-screen LCD display, which can be used to show maps, view DVDs, and program a range of media sources, including compressed audio discs, and iPods. Having collected the laurels for Car Tech's Best of CES last year with its Avic-Z1 in-dash navigation and multimedia system, Pioneer is using this year's show to launch the Avic-Z2.
