Nokia Series 40 phones: 1.5 billion sold, and counting

Nokia's Series 40 line of mobile phones has reached an important milestone.

The mobile company today announced that it sold the 1.5 billionth Nokia Series 40 phone in San Paulo, Brazil. The device, an Asha 303, was sold to 21-year-old Mayara Rodrigues, who wants to use the phone to keep "in touch with friends and family through social networks," Nokia said. The Asha 303 boasts a touch screen and QWERTY keyboard and comes preinstalled with Angry Birds Lite.

Nokia is showing signs of life, proving it can rush product to market, innovate and maybe even get something commercial out of its research and development.

Nokia intros Asha family of phones for emerging markets

Though the headliners of Nokia World were the company's first Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 700, Nokia also introduced a new line of handsets today designed for emerging markets.

The new Nokia Asha (which means hope in Hindi) family includes four models--the Nokia Asha 200, Asha 201, Asha 300, and Asha 303--and is part of the company's mission to bring affordable, stylish, and feature-rich phones to all parts of the world.
