Social video sharing app ShowYou goes deep with v3.0

ShowYou, a social video sharing tool that Apple called one of the top social-networking iPad apps of 2011, is letting its users go deeper.

First launched last April, ShowYou is sort of like Flipboard for video. Users see a grid of aggregated videos from sources like YouTube, Vimeo, and many others that have been shared by their friends on services like Twitter and Facebook.

Although the service is also available on the iPhone, its real value is on Apple's tablet, where users can easily scroll through an attractive grid of the latest and greatest videos making their way around … Read more

Vimeo rolls out total Web site redesign

Vimeo, the freemium-model video sharing site for the artsy crowd, is undergoing a remake. And this new casting puts a spotlight on improved navigation, search, and privacy options.

Beginning Tuesday, users can sign up to test run the new Vimeo design and features, which are planned to fully launch by the end of the second quarter, according to Vimeo Chief Executive Dae Mellencamp. The new site retains the general color palette and ethos of Vimeo, but with new style elements and advanced uploading options. That, and the entire site's back end was recoded from scratch.

Vimeo finally comes to Android, Windows phone

LAS VEGAS--Online video fanatics, the wait is over, as Vimeo's free mobile app is now available on Android devices (including the Amazon Kindle Fire) and Windows Phone devices.

Now, users of these mobile platforms can browse, watch, like, comment on, and add videos, just as they would on Vimeo.com. Plus, the new apps come with Vimeo's upload manager, which makes it easy to continue an interrupted upload without having to start over.

So far, I like the design of the new apps. Vimeo for Android (download) is clean, and has much of the charm and polished feel … Read more

Cloudy, with a chance of video

With Apple's iCloud coming next week, hot on the heels of Amazon and Google's cloud services for music, it seems like the years-old dream of cloud media streaming is coming to greater fruition than ever before. That's promising news to me, a person who cut the cord on his cable TV over a year and a half ago. I live off the Internet and my various devices--my laptop, game consoles, iPhone, and iPad--to get my media, be it TV shows, movies, music or books.

So far, it looks like 2011 will be more the year of Cloud Music than that of Cloud Video. And that's a shame, because I'm getting fed up with my half-baked digital-video life.

I've spent the last week with a product called Pogoplug Video, which attempts to do what no one's currently offering yet: the ability to stream multiformat video files easily across multiple platforms, be they gaming console, computer, or phone/tablet, even across the Internet or 3G.

I held high hopes for the Pogoplug Video. The $199 device is much like the Pogoplug Pro we reviewed last year, equipped with a more powerful processor. And, it does what it promises, to a point: video files stored on hard drives or USB sticks plugged into the Pogoplug do indeed technically play back on iPhones, iPads, laptops, or even via DLNA on an Xbox 360 or PS3.… Read more

Shoot video like a pro

The hardware and HD capabilities behind the iPhone's video camera are impressive, but its built-in controls for shooting video are frustratingly primitive for more-experienced filmmakers, and the iPhone isn't always smart about handling factors like exposure and white balance. Filmic Pro gives your camera a new front-end for shooting higher-quality video, with professional tools for controlling exposure, focal point, and more.

Filmic Pro offers an interface that is clean and simple, and all of its controls run along the bottom of screen, making it perfect for keeping a steady thumb grip on your camera. On the left, you … Read more

Experience Vimeo.com on your iPhone

Popular video enthusiast site Vimeo.com does not have the same level of viewership as YouTube, but it's definitely a great place to find interesting user-made videos. Today, Vimeo released a free iPhone app that lets you bring the video site with you on the go, but it lacks one very important feature.

Vimeo for iPhone (free) lets you join up with the site or log in within the app so you can upload, edit, and view videos on your iPhone. It comes with many of the popular Vimeo user-requested features like the Inbox, the ability to Watch Later, … Read more

Vimeo videos go fine art at Volta N.Y.

editor's notebook This week, New Yorkers are enjoying even more than their usual outsized share of art, with something in the neighborhood of 10 different fine-art marketplaces happening simultaneously in the city. And artsy YouTube rival Vimeo is taking advantage of the situation to burnish its brand, promote some of the artists who use its site, and spice up people's elevator rides.

In concert with the art- and tech-minded PR firm Culture Shock Marketing, Vimeo is serving up "Projection," a program of short films--including some dazzling digital animations--as part of Volta N.Y. The international art … Read more
