We're starting to get just a little excited about impending U.S. launch of the Toyobaru twins: the 2013 Subaru BRZ and 2013 Scion FR-S. Over the last decade, Subaru has been a follower, not a leader, in automotive technology. But in one swoop the company is giving its cars a set of advanced driver assistance features competitive with those from Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

Subaru's new EyeSight system, which will first be available on the 2013 Legacy and Outback, uses two cameras to monitor what is out in front of the car. These cameras use stereo processing to determine the distance of other cars or objects ahead. They also can recognize lane lines.

For the 2012 update, Subaru downsized the engine, losing half a liter and a little power. But mating that smaller engine with a continuously variable transmission results in very good fuel economy, high 20s in our testing.

After seeing the Subaru Concept STI that debuted in Los Angeles, we had a pretty good idea of what the production 2013 Subaru BRZ would look like.

We now have official photographic confirmation. Of course, there are no real surprises. The production BRZ looks nearly identical to the Toyota GT 86 with which it shares a platform. The vehicles are so similar that it takes a side-by-side comparison to tell that the Subaru has a different front grille opening, fender vents that are similar those on the STI concept, and a different wheel and tire package.
