Dell will sell its sleekest ultrabook with a version of Ubuntu Linux this fall.

The Dell XPS 13 ultrabook will be offered with Ubuntu 12.04LTS preloaded in select geographies, the company said in a statement.

The initiative is an extension of Project Sputnik, a pilot project aimed at creating an Ubuntu-based developer laptop.

Hans Reiser, a noted Linux programmer convicted in 2008 of murdering his estranged wife, was ordered in a civil lawsuit today to pay his two children a total of $60 million for killing their mother.

Attorneys for Rory and Niorline Reiser, now 12 and 11, respectively, had asked jurors in the wrongful death case to order Hans Reiser to pay $10 million in compensatory damages to each child and an additional $5 million in punitive damages.

If you're one of the 200,000 owners of the ultra-low-cost Raspberry Pi computer, you'll soon be able to buy a camera add-on.

The tiny 5-megapixel camera module attaches to the Raspberry Pi via a ribbon cable and is expected to cost between $20 and $25. Founder Eben Upton revealed this information at the Raspberry Jam event in Cambridge, England.

He also mentioned that the Raspberry Pi Foundation -- a British nonprofit formed to create this tiny and cheap Linux computer for kids -- has been working on improving the software for the computer. According to Upton, there has been a "fourfold" increase in performance since April. … Read more

Earlier this week security company F-Secure uncovered a new Web-based malware attack that uses Java to identify and distribute platform-specific malware binaries to OS X, Windows, and Linux installations. In the company's first findings, the malware being issued for OS X was a PowerPC binary, which prevented it from running on many Macs using Snow Leopard and Lion; however, new developments have unveiled an x86 binary for the malware.

Researchers at F-Secure have uncovered a new exploit that attempts to install a backdoor malware program on Windows, Linux, and OS X machines. As with other malware, this uses social engineering approaches to try tricking users, but in addition it runs a check to see what operating system the user is running and then issues a malware installer for that platform.

Microsoft's Windows 7 is about to beat XP as the world's leading operating system, at least according to new data from Net Applications.

For the month of June, Windows 7 scored a market share of 41.6 percent versus XP with 43.6 percent, the narrowest gap between the two since Windows 7 debuted in 2009.
