PARIS -- Selling 18 million phones this year may sound like a success, and for Chinese phone maker Xiaomi, it's better than the 7 million Android smartphones it sold last year. But it's not enough.
In China, consumers doubled smartphone ownership in the last year to about 500 million total -- including 340 million Android phones and 140 million iPhones. To find growth in a very crowded market, the company a few months back hired Hugo Barra, Google's former director of Android product development.

Google Play might be getting some wanted (or unwanted, depending on how you look at it) features for its Android app. Among these features, of course, is more integration with Google+.
Also this week, a 4K monitor briefly popped up on Apple's European online retail site, and then was removed by a couple days later. What could it mean? I have a few guesses.
Thanks for watching! … Read more
The revolution won't be televised, but it may get livestreamed over Google Glass.
At least, it's taking a step in that direction on Wednesday as writer and artist Molly Crabapple livestreams her latest drawing project with a hacked pair of Google Glass. Inspired by Edgar Degas' paintings of dancers, Crabapple will be drawing the adult film actress and aerialist Stoya as she moves through her warm-up routine.
And yes, Stoya will be clothed.
The project, called "Glass Gaze: An online performance with hacked Glass and Stoya," is multifaceted. It looks at the relationship between the artist'… Read more
Heads up, bookworms: the Google Play Books app for Android has received a noteworthy update.
An enhanced version of Google's official e-reader app has started rolling out this week, bringing some nifty new features.
Key among the changes is the capability to upload files directly from a phone or tablet. As some know, this was previously only available for the desktop Play Books experience. It's worth noting, however, that uploading only applies to EPUB and PDF files.
Additionally, the app now lets readers open up any e-book in landscape mode. This is surely welcome news to tablet owners … Read more
Google Drive for iOS continues to take small steps in becoming more like its Android counterpart.
Yesterday, Google updated the app with two small but welcome additions: file sorting and a find/replace feature for documents.
Now, when viewing your main file list, you'll see a Sort button in the upper-right corner. Tap it to access the following new options:Last edited by me Last modified Last opened by me Title (the default)
Google Drive also offers a helpful new tool for anyone who relies on the app for document editing: find-and-replace.
When you have a document open, you … Read more

It took a few years, but the Google Sheets spreadsheet app has caught up with its productivity-tool companions, Docs and Slides, with one important feature: it now works with or without a network connection.
Offline support isn't the only change for the online spreadsheet. Google also rewrote the app to make it faster, gave its users the ability to partition private areas off within a shared document, and gave it support for more types of calculations.
Offline support is a key sticking point for Web apps, the sort that Google promotes through its Google Drive effort and Chrome OS … Read more
PARIS -- Google+ advertising has arrived -- but not on the Google+ social network.
The ads, called +Posts, use Google+ technology, with the ability to combine video and imagery with the Google+ commenting system. But they're delivered through Google's display ad network, not on the Google+ pages themselves.
"It's a new means of engaging users over the Google display network," Google+ leader Bradley Horowitz said at the LeWeb show here, promoting the new ad technology that debuted Tuesday. "It allows for much richer engagement as opposed to just a display ad or traffic-generation ad.&… Read more
