Waterproof tablet drops into AT&T this month

LAS VEGAS--Finally, a Honeycomb tablet for the hot tub.

The Pantech Element, announced during AT&T's CES 2012 press conference, is a waterproof tablet running Android 3.2. The tablet is due out on January 22, priced at $299 with a two-year contract.

The device uses an 8-inch screen, with a 1.5GHz dual-core snapdragon processor running behind it. All of the Android tablet standard features are present, such as front- and rear-facing cameras (2 megapixels and 5 megapixels, respectively), microSD memory expansion, Micro-HDMI output, and a Micro-USB transfer connection.

LAS VEGAS--Samsung Electronics kicked off its press conference today, as expected, highlighting its smart TV lineup and what the company is calling "Smart Interaction" technology, which gives viewers control over their set by waving, shouting, or otherwise using gestures and voice.

Next up, also as many expected, Samsung unveiled its "ultimate TV," a 55-inch "super" OLED TV. And it went on to showcase new mobile devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T, Galaxy Tab 7.7 on Verizon, and a second-generation Series 9 notebook.

Windows on an iPad: OnLive Desktop rents you PC in the cloud

Can iPads and tablets eventually kill the laptop? OnLive thinks it has the solution.

The limitations currently make such a proposition unlikely, but OnLive's announcement of a cloud-based Windows environment for the iPad provides an alternative to the App Store. Color us intrigued, but skeptical.

OnLive Desktop is a freemium service, with a free 2GB-capped service and a $9.99/month premium account with 50GB of storage. The idea's a little bit like Dropbox, in theory, mixed with the type of virtualization seen from companies like Citrix. OnLive rents users a Windows PC on one of their servers, along with access to a full suite of applications, including Microsoft Office and flash-enabled web browsers, to theoretically create a desktop-like working environment when connected to the internet.… Read more
