LAS VEGAS--Ford chose CES 2011 as the venue to introduce its all-electric Focus. The car, based on the 2012 Focus model being introduced this year, is actually Ford's second electric vehicle, as it has already begun delivering electric versions of its Transit Connect utility vehicle.
Ford has been reluctant to state a range figure for the electric Focus, as it is still undergoing EPA testing, but a spokesman told us it would go up to 100 miles. The car uses a 23 kilowatt-hour liquid cooled lithium-ion battery pack and has a top speed of 84 mph.
LAS VEGAS--Samsung has definitely led CES 2011 in unusual home theater designs, but LG's HX996TS home theater system is no slouch with its futuristic look.
LG announced the 5.2 home theater system at its press conference yesterday, touting its "3D" sound. The 3D moniker may be gimmicky, but the HX996TS speakers have some interesting design choices, with the tower speakers having top-mounted drivers for what LG calls Vertical 3D Effect Channel.
The system also includes two subwoofers (not pictured), a feature rarely seen on all-in-one package systems. LG also touts its "Cinema Dome Effect," … Read more
There's all sorts of information being processed by your car's sensors and computers to which the average driver simply isn't privy. Griffin wants to give you a peek behind the scenes with its CarTrip OBD monitoring system and CleanDrive app.
The hardware consists of a small CarTrip module that plugs into your vehicle's onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) port and collects data from the car's computer, storing to its internal memory or an optional SD card expansion. The unit is able to then connect wirelessly to an iOS or Android device via Bluetooth and transmit that data … Read more
LAS VEGAS--At last year's CES, we put together a slideshow called "Sexy sells at CES" that highlighted part of the human element that companies use to help make their gadgets stand out on the crowded show floor--or at least encourage people to stop at their booths.
For some reason, this slideshow proved to be rather popular with our readers, so we thought we'd cobble something together this year.
Don't get the wrong impression. Not every company hires models to show off their wares and talk about their products. And even when they do, the product … Read more
LAS VEGAS--General Electric today said the next phase of its $200 million entrepreneurship challenge will focus on home energy management.
GE at the Consumer Electronics Show said that the contest, called "Ecomagination Challenge: Powering Your Home," will begin January 18 and run through to March 1.
In July, GE launched the first phase of the contest with four venture capital companies to seek out business ideas for modernizing the grid from the general public. In November, it said it will provide grants or invest directly in several power grid-related companies, covering everything from way-out ideas such as solar-powered … Read more
LAS VEGAS--The gadget orgy that is CES always throws up some pretty weird tech concepts, and the 2011 show is no different. Razer has just come up with the concept for the Switchblade, a portable gaming system with a multitouch display and an adaptive LCD-based keyboard that changes dynamically depending on what you're playing.
Razer developed the Switchblade idea because, in the words of Chief Executive Min-Liang Tan, PC gaming "has always been impossible in a portable form factor." Apart from, y'know, on laptops, Netbooks, tablets, and other devices that Razer seems never to have heard … Read more
LAS VEGAS. I never thought anything would give me more pleasure than taking an orange-handled hammer and smashing an Acer laptop.
I was still glowing from managing this yesterday that I almost didn't hear a rather short lady asking if I wanted to shoot a free throw with my iPhone.
Because I was wearing my shiny black Costume National boots, she must have naturally assumed that I owned an iPhone, which I don't. However, I confess that I have seen Golden State Warriors fans wanting to toss several types of smartphones in the direction of Andris Biedrins, every … Read more
LAS VEGAS--Part online bookstore, part e-reader, and part social network, Copia has just added Windows 7 tablets to its lineup of supported devices.
Being demonstrated this week at CES, Copia for Windows 7 tablets uses the same reading and social-networking environment found on other devices and platforms. The Copia app makes its Windows 7 tablet CES debut on such systems as the new Samsung Sliding PC 7, also on display at CES.
Reading an e-book through Copia is similar to reading one on most other e-readers, except there's a social aspect. Your Copia library list is shareable, should you choose to share it. So when you add a new book to your library, other people can see the books you're reading.
You can share your library list with everyone in the Copia community or just with friends that you've added to your own network. You can even create Copia discussion groups centered on different books or topics and make those groups either private, open by request, or open to everyone.… Read more
LAS VEGAS--We've seen a lot of touch-screen smartphones at CES 2011 so far, but very few with QWERTY keyboards. However, Acer's got one that combines both.
The Android 2.2-based Acer BeTouch E210 has a compact, slate design that features a 2.6-inch, 320x240 touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard, as well as an optical trackpad. Hoping to provide more instant access, the keyboard has been redesigned since the BeTouch E130 and now includes shortcuts to contacts, camera, and messaging apps.
The BeTouch E210 has full wireless options and a 3.2-megapixel camera, but it's not … Read more
If there's one word to describe the LG Optimus 2X, it would be "fast." Even though I knew it has a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, I wasn't expecting the hands-on experience to be that speedy. Indeed, I was able to simply fly through the different screens and applications, launching apps and switching tasks in the blink of an eye. While I didn't have time to sit through a video game, LG claims the device makes for a very responsive gaming experience as well.
The display is also really easy on the eyes. Measuring 4 inches … Read more
