Rafe Needleman and Donald Bell join Brian Tong on the show today to discuss all the new video-streaming options coming down the pipe. We got Amazon, Viacom, HBO, Netflix, Verizon, Redbox, and now possibly another service called Quickflix. Which one will you choose? In other news, the iPad 3 is coming in March, and we investigate who exactly Pinterest appeals to. If you are a guy you most likely have no interest in Pinterest.

FEEDBACK LOOP LOOP:

-Aaron from Champaign says Pinterest is for weddings
This guys wife just showed him Pinterest and he has no interest in Pinterest
Pinterest is basically made to annoy guys
Brett from Michigan wants to clear up a fact about the Reading Rainbow theme song

EMAILS:

Hello!

in response to you guys talking about the stickiness of facebook, i would have to disagree, i had a facebook account for literally 2 days before I “”deleted”" it. I actually found it kind of boring….hmmmmm to each his own i guess… Tillman

—–

Was just going to say i was having a not amazing day and was just
cleaning and listening to your show, and then i hear brian tell some
caller how to spell g-i-v-e-i-t.com and pinterest haha. Made my day
loveeeeee the jokes!

love the show!(obviously) TOMAS

—–

Hi BOL crew,

I think this sums up pinterest perfectly:

http://ilovecharts.tumblr.com/post/16875898793/people-who-use-pinterest-i-dont-want-to-start

I have a Pinterest account and am female, but I just don’t get it. If I want to share something I find online with my friends, I do it on Facebook or Twitter. If I want to save something for later, I use instapaper. And if I want to mark something as “”to buy”" I do it on Amazon. I just don’t see how Pinterest fits in.

Love the show! Nicole

—–

Hi Buzz Crew,

First, I’m a lady, so maybe what I have to say is not what you’re looking for, but I really like Pinterest. I’m planning a wedding, so I’m pulling together images of flowers and hairstyles that I really like to help with inspiration. I also like to find recipes, pottery (I’m a potter, so I like to see what other people are doing with their work), and other creative ideas through pinterest. But I can see where it’s a niche market for people with two X chromosomes. I do find it overwhelming at times and have trouble with self-curation. We’ll see how it changes as it develops.

As my fiance (who introduced me to BOL) said when he discovered I was on the site, “Bitches love Pinterest.” It’s true. Gloria

—–

EMAILS:

Hey guys,
Regarding last week’s discussion about Foxconn and other Apple factories working conditions. The one thing that I don’t hear anybody saying is that Foxconn is actually one of the better factories to work at in China.

A coworker of mine who has been to several big manufacturing plants in China/Asia (including Foxconn) says that there are dozens if not hundreds of plants from big clothing and electronics manufacturers who do not provide any oversight or supervision in the way that Apple does.

Because of all the press surrounding Foxconn, Apple is working to improve things by placing supervisors in the factories and pressuring change. Clearly, Apple can and should do more (being the biggest player in the area) but they are also taking all the heat in the press so that these other companies have no motivation to improve conditions because they are ignored by the media.

Just wanted to point that out, I think it would be great if Apple and Foxconn completely reformed their practices, but the fact is that it’s a problem with the whole system and not just one company. Jesse Potter”

—–

Hey Buzz Crew,

I’ve heard discussion about Google’s new privacy policy all over the place, generally balanced but with discernible “”anti”" vibes. Well, just now, Facebook showed me an ad for a Commander Shepard Hoodie! That is awesome! Somebody sold them the right information! I wouldn’t mind if Google propositioned cool goods like that to me. Just saying.

You guys are awesome! Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,

Mark from PA

—–

Hey Buzz Crew,

Like everyone else I received Google’s updated privacy policy and it
is indeed shorter and much easier to read. I have edited and
re-phrased it to make it even shorter and easier to read:

We are Google. You will be assimilated. Your biological and
technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is
futile.

When interviewing somebody about their website, can you PLEASE spell the website. I *listen* to the show in the car. I was totally interested in the interview about givit.com, but became frustrated because I thought you were saying getit.com, and I couldn’t find the stupid site using my smartphone. Finally found its spelling in the show notes, but, man, what a hassle. Same thing for that website jean simmons was promoting. Or the dating site based on your location. And I could go on and on. Grrrrrrr. Christopher

On this week's Buzz Out Loud, Brian and Molly take Apple (and others) to task for unsafe and inhumane working conditions at consumer electronics factories in China. It's time for Apple and us, the consumers, to demand better. Plus, Google's privacy policy changes, Netflix's big bounce-back, and Computer Love. And meet Givit, the way to share private videos of your kids or, um, other things.

Hey Buzz Crew,
In episode #1577 you guys talked about the new iTunes U and what that could mean for schools that want to adopt this technology. My high school in Ohio has been using iPads as digital workbooks since the start of the 2010-11 school year, so I thought I should share a few details about how the system was implemented. My high school is a private catholic school, so I understand that it may not be representative of how public schools could implement it, but I figure the information will be useful nonetheless. As part of the cost of attendance, a $200 fee was added as a “”rental fee”" for use of the ipad for a year. Each year a student attends the school they pay the fee, and get to keep the iPad upon graduation. Students can even keep the iPad on summer breaks and use it however they choose. It’s not a perfect system, since if a student starts at the school as a freshman, the kid is paying $300 extra dollars than paying for the iPad outright, but the $200 annual fee does cover cost of the workbooks apps, and also what amounts to an insurance policy if the student breaks the thing. The system has worked really well here, as the interactive features that the workbooks provide are a significant upgrade over the standard workbook. In regards to your concerns about how tech-savvy some of the teaching staff could be, its actually worked out nicely here, as the students seem eager to aid the staff in becoming tech literate, which in turn has had a positive effect on the relationship between the teachers and students.Like I said, it’s not a perfect system, but its worked out really well here and the revamped iTunes U should only aid that.

-Alex from Ohio

—–

The same people who did the Eagle Cam last year are doing the same with a momma bear, and her cub. They placed a camera inside a bear den in Minnesota. You can watch live video of the bears, or watch video recorded earlier of the bear cubs birth.
“”Observers report the mother and child communicate using grunts, groans, and squeals.”"

http://www.ustream.tv/jewelblackbear

Maybe the bear should get a Twitter account. I mean if a Senator who speaks in incomprehensible phrases can get 400,000 followers, a bear should be able to get at least a few thousand.

—–

“Hey guys,

Great work on CES 2012 in Las Vegas. It was totally the year of 3D printing!

Just a quick info. The word SOPA in greek means ''shut up'', just go to google translate if you want! [ ???? ] (the greek word to put)

Remember when they originally agreed to 28 days in return for more streaming content?

So it’s now, what, a year later and no new content ANNND they are pushing the dates back to “”maximize the potential”" of its new releases?

What a crock of doggie doo-doo!

I just found the online equivalent of the girl who doesn’t want you to ask her out so she injects a story about her boyfriend (whether she has one or not) into conversations as soon as she meets you.

I’ve been chatting with a woman at work — trying to let her get to know me. I mentioned some photos I have on Facebook, and she said send me the link. But apparently I’m only in the friend zone. She friended me with a Facebook profile she uses for work contacts only. I realized she had another profile for “”real”" friends when Facebook’s ‘people you may know’ feature busted her by showing me her real profile.

The Internet flexed its power with this week's SOPA/PIPA blackouts, but make no mistake: this battle isn't over yet, and will only intensify--it might get a lot more sneaky, in fact. But this week? The Internet wins. Will students lose out with Apple's new plan to revamp the textbook industry? Or just the students (and schools) who can't can't afford iPads?

EMAILS:

High Data Usage Alert
Really AT&T? Really?

The only reason I tolerated your crappy service for so long was that I was grandfathered into an unlimited iPhone data plan. So, really? After my whole family has iPhones on the same plan, and we’re all on 2 yr contracts, your now going to start throttling our data speeds in addition to capping the data on the new lines? Really?

I just hope this let’s me break my contract and move to sprint. I’m sure the coverage is abysmal, and the call quality stinks, but really, is that any different from AT&T?

–Nate

——

hey guys,

lately I’ve been hearing that CNET supports SOPA. Is that true? Cameron”

The U.S. Government does, but we just wanted to make that clear for you in this weeks show. Kodak's facing an ugly future, Barnes and Noble is looking to spin-off its Nook division and will Yahoo ever be relevant again? Kanye West is comparing himself to Steve Jobs, seriously. Plus, we can't wait to see all the new shiny toys at CES 2012!

Hey buzz crew,

I would like to make a prediction for 2012 that some computer maker will create a windows 8 or (less likely IOS) tablet that will have a laptop and desktop dock which will have separate processors and RAM so that when it is docked, the mobile processors will be supplemented with the additional resources to present the user with a full OS experience. This of course will then spell the end of traditional laptops and desktops in 2013.

Thanks you all… Love the show.

-Stephen

—–

Here’s one I think was overlooked. A bit out there, but could easily be done.

Google will buy T-Mobile in 2012.

I’m just sayin’….they’ve got the cash and lots of dark fiber, why not. Get AT&T and Verizon shaking in their boots!

—–

Hello gang.

I’ve noticed something. I have a MacBook, an iPhone and an iPad. I also have a Kindle, a Samsung Galaxy S II, a Dell running Windows, an HP running Ubuntu and I was a .net developer for 6 years. I like computers and gadgets and I’m getting a little tired of hearing the “”Oh, you’re one of those apple fan girls”" comment (subtext: “”Oh, you’re one of those people that would pay $1000 for a piece of poo if it was lacquered in white and had an apple logo”". I like my stuff. But it’s just stuff. On Apple as a company, or Steve Jobs as a person, I don’t really have an opinion.

This holiday season I once again found myself in a heated discussion about Apple products and the people who buy them. And I realized something. The heat in the discussion was not coming from me, but from people who do not use Apple products. More often than not, I end up having to defend what I’m spending my money on. (What I’m really thinking is “”I’m a grown woman and I make my own money and I can use it however I see fit so mind your own business.”")

I’m starting to see a pattern. People I know who use Apple products just sort of have them and don’t talk about them very much. People who don’t, seem to give it much more thought and are surprisingly aggressive when they talk about people who do. Many times, when someone writes in to the show and are really upset about something, they are referring to you guys being too easy on Apple. In the words of Carrie Bradshaw “”I can’t help but wonder”", what is it about that company that provokes such passion?

—–

Guys –

Just got finished listening to your 2012 predictions podcast and really liked it. However, there’s just one small request I gotta ask of you all.

Could you guys start saying twenty-twelve instead of two thousand and twelve? You’re adding two full syllables in that are totally unnecessary. Not to mention that everyone is eventually going to start saying twenty because no one will want to say two thousand and twenty-two, but now seems like a good time.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

–Jason

—–

I have been an avid listener to your podcasts for years now, but now I
learned that CBS is supporting SOPA. I have discontinued your podcasts
and hopes your parent company changes its mind.

Thanks,
Seth

It's Microsoft's last CES, we say goodbye, and will it have any major impact on the worlds largest electronics show. Short answer. No. The vote on SOPA gets delayed until 2012, just in time to try to make people forget. Plus, some of the Top 10 lists from the internet meme world! We love you Nyan Cat!

To make the gmail layout legible you have to click the gear (settings)
default.

Now the redesign doesn’t make you dizzy at all.

Sent from my iPhone Joshua

—–

Hey Buzz Crew,

In a recent voicemail, Champ asked if the AT&T website made a mistake claiming the iPhone 4S is 4G. BT said yes, but it’s no mistake. AT&T includes HSPA+ in their definition of 4G. That said, how long are we going to keep counting the number of Gs in a phone? I’m over it.

Brad from Phoenix

—–

Hey its Blake ! Love the show…I was listening to some of your old episodes. And in ep.1556 y’all metioned that people send about 3200 or so texts a month. Well I JUST got a new phone Wednesday. I already have sent 7,421 Texts. Todays Saturday. That mean I sent about 1800 texts a day since wednesday. I also have an Unlimited 4G plans, so ontop of all the webbrowsing/streaming/apps/etc. I still text like a boss. Infact it took me about a minute to write all of this ;) #TeenageSwag

Blake

—–

Mr. Stephen Beacham,

We are the 10 percent. We are getting forced to “convert” in elementary school. We have to choose between products that work well, but cost more, or products that work for everyone but us. We are denied quality cooking utensils. Our iPhones refuse to get service. We are seen as sinister. We have been ignored by the 90%.

On Thursday, December 8, 2011, we took the first step towards recognition. We occupied Twitter. By reversing the position of your tweet stream and sidebar, the 90% are forced to endure what the 10% must go through on a daily basis. So Mr. Beacham, when you call the new twitter “backwards” you are giving us just what we want. Who are we? We are the left handers of the world, and whether you like it or not, we are here to stay. We are the 10%.

~Joseph (southpaw spokesman)

P.S. If indeed you are left handed, those righties have gotten into your head. You’re not sitting at our table at lunch.

—–
