Today, RIM introduced the latest version of its entry-level Curve series. Available in Canada later this month and shipping to other carriers worldwide starting in September, the new BlackBerry Curve will come in three models: the CDMA-only BlackBerry Curve 9350, the GSM/UMTS BlackBerry Curve 9360, and the dual-mode GSM/CDMA BlackBerry Curve 9370.
Designed for those looking for a more affordable smartphone option or for people making the jump from a feature phone, the Curve offers a more entry-level set of … Read more
Just when you thought the legal battles between the CTIA and the city of San Francisco were over, it appears that the fight may continue.
In an interview today, a spokesman for the wireless industry's trade group told CNET that the organization is strongly considering challenging a new city law that requires San Francisco retailers to post informational notices that cell phones emit radiofrequency (RF) energy and offer fact sheets to consumers who request them.
John Walls, CTIA's vice president for public affairs, refused to say exactly what legal recourse the group is considering, but that it is … Read more
If you miss the feeling of carrying around one of those old-fashioned standalone cameras (remember those?), this case lets you dress your iPhone up like one.
The Wood Camera iPhone Case, from Photojojo, comes in bamboo or walnut engraved with old-school camera stylings to "up your photo-taking cred." It's made for the iPhone 4 and contains openings for the phone's volume button, headphone jack, power button, and camera flash.
The $42 case slides on in two parts over each end of the phone, closing in the middle, and won't crack, scratch, or splinter, Photojojo promises. (Just keep the thing away from termites.) It also has a snug felt internal lining to cushion the phone's glass from the wood.
While we haven't gotten our mits on the case yet, it certainly exudes a sleek retro flair. We can imagine it might hold particular appeal for young Digital Age hipsters who are discovering the joys of analog photography but may not want to tote an actual old-school cam around all the time. … Read more
While everyone was busy picking up $99HP TouchPads this weekend, I was holding out hope for a similar fire sale for the HP Pre 3, but it looks like that's not going to happen. At least, not in the States anyway.
HP confirmed to PCMag.com today that the WebOS smartphone will not be sold in the U.S. Instead, it will be sold unlocked in the U.K. and France, but at a drastically reduced price of around $75 (down from $490 to $500). Since it is a quad-band GSM phone, you would be able to use it here with AT&T and T-Mobile service, but only on their EDGE networks.
If you're still keen on getting one, be prepared to act quick. HP said the Pre 3 is already sold out in Germany, and the smartphone is expected to go on sale in France and the U.K. "shortly."
However, the $50 discount is not available in other sales channels, and the usual two-year agreement still applies (with a new line or eligible upgrade). So if you must have a new Bold 9930, get it online, as it seems to be cheaper that way. … Read more
Wal-Mart and its TracFone-powered mobile virtual network operator, StraightTalk, are getting ready to bring an affordable Android to the masses.
Last week, Wal-Mart's Web Site began taking reservations for the Samsung Galaxy Precedent, a low-cost barrier into Android's potential. Expected to run $149.88 without a contract, it becomes even more appealing when paired with StraightTalk's $45 unlimited voice, text, and data plan.
Specifications for the Galaxy Precedent are admirable considering the price point. They include Android 2.2 Froyo, an 800MHz processor, 384MB RAM, a 3.2-inch display, and a 2-megapixel camera. Toss in the Android … Read more
LG added another member to its ever-growing Optimus family today, when it unveiled the budget-friendly Optimus Sol. Named for its high-clarity display, the Sol features a 3.8-inch Ultra AMOLED touch screen and also boasts a 1GHz processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and a 5-megapixel camera in a thin, 0.39-inch (9.8mm) body.
While it's certainly not a high-end device by any stretch of the imagination, it could serve LG well by catering to a broad demographic. Generally, first-time smartphone buyers are attracted to lower prices and LG has done a good job thus far with its Optimus One line.
Another feature that likely will help the Optimus Sol stand out from competition is its power management software, which promises to extend battery life by 20 to 30 percent. What's more, users can choose a "Dark UI" setting on the display that uses less white light, conserving even more power.
The Optimus Sol will be available in mid-September when it begins hitting select carriers throughout Europe. Shortly after, the handset will find its way to Central America and South America.
Color options will be black, white, and "titan" and will vary depending on its regional availability. Pricing has yet to be determined, but likely will be announced in the next few weeks as carriers are revealed. … Read more
Last week, my colleague at CNET News, Stephen Shankland, tweeted that HTC had sent out a Facebook invitation for an event September 1 in England, France, Spain, and Germany. The company often holds fan meetups in different cities around the world to give customers a chance to check out its current portfolio of devices and to sometimes showcase some of its upcoming products, and it looks like we'll get both this time around.
The beginning of the invite reads, "It's been a while since we last met, so we thought that we'd invite you to come … Read more
