Getting dialed into your personal workspace is a fun and exciting challenge. When that space is the kitchen--specifically the oven--the resulting meals that emerge are like no others. Experience tells you if the oven runs hot or on the cool side, where the hot spots are, and even which burner burns better. Knowledgeable cooks in their own familiar kitchens are capable of producing anything. Trial and error gives way to familiarity, and understanding of the tools at hand gives way to delicious meals.
Everybody loves a backyard barbecue get-together. Having fun with friends and family only gets better when a grill is involved, Besides the enjoyment of spending time with the people you care about, a backyard barbecue offers the rare opportunity for everybody to eat exactly what they want. If somebody wants chicken, they simply throw it on the grill. The same goes for those who want burgers, steaks, or veggie burgers. No other form of social food gathering offers quite the individuality that cooking with a grill can provide.
Pizza is an amazingly complex thing for a food item so seemingly simple. Bread, cheese, sauce, that's it. That's enough to get you going. Oh sure, you can drown your pizza in a sea of toppings, but the essential structure starts from basic everyday ingredients. The deceptively complex nature of pizza is both a good thing and a bad thing. Endless varieties abound, and there are certainly great pizzas to be found, but it is all too easy to order up a lousy pizza. Good thing you can bake your own.
But don't pick up that pizza … Read more
Cheese goes well with cheese. Few other food groups can claim that to the extent that cheese can. Besides crackers or bread, nothing seems to go quite as well with cheese other than more cheese. With such a wide variety of cheeses available it's possible to have a cheese-based meal, while still experiencing an exciting depth of flavors. From hot-and-gooey to the strong-and-smelly, cheese is easy to get carried away with.
You know the scene: A hot summer day, friends and family gathered in the back yard, perhaps a football being tossed around, laughter and good times in the air. Of course, this scene would not be complete without the grill fired up, permeating the air with the scent of delicious foods cooking. Survey the grill-top, and we find hotdogs, hamburgers, steaks, and chicken. But where are the vegetables?
No longer must vegetables be relegated to "after-the-meat-is-done" status. The Mesh Grill-Top Chef's Pan is perfect for cooking up a batch of healthy vegetables on the grill. The heavy-gauge … Read more
When young we learn at an astonishing rate. Soon after we learn about Mother's Day, we learn about Father's Day. The next logical thought in the process is to ask when "Kid's Day" is. The answer I always got was short, simple, and true: "Every day is Kid's Day." The recent Earth Day makes me think of this answer, and the realization that truly every day is Earth Day.
Presentation is everything. And $20 price tags don't hurt either. Why blend the boring old-fashioned way, when you could be blending in style? In style, that is, with a tornado. The Vortex Portable Mixer is powered by a 9000rpm motor that quickly and effectively mixes whatever liquid-based material you put in it.
Although it is mainly designed and marketed toward protein shake drinkers (who would rather avoid nasty bits of dry clumps in their beverage), the portable mixer has numerous uses. For example, a spinning (and dizzying) tornado in a bottle could be a fascinating twist on old-timey cocktail … Read more
Prep work can be so monotonous--boring, even. Anybody who has ever peeled pounds of potatoes or chopped any amount of onions would agree. (Well, OK, onions in particular keep things interesting with their affinity for tear ducts.) That being said, prep work pays off; the reward is almost always worth it. After all, that's why we do it. Sometimes, it's the simple little things that make meals special.
I enjoy a good salad, but I don't enjoy the preparation they sometimes require. Carrots are a delicious ingredient in most any salad, but perhaps more than any other … Read more
Admit it. Go on, admit it. You always wanted an ice sculpture centerpiece. I know I have. I'm not ashamed to admit it. An ice sculpture may be cheesy or fancy depending on your perspective (not to mention the sculpture), but there is no denying there is something just kind of neat about watching an ice sculpture slowly melt before your eyes. With little or no work, you can now have your very own ice sculpture (over and over again).
These Ice Sculpture Molds, available in Penguin or Angelfish, may not be the high art ice sculpture you would … Read more
It's easy to become accustomed to the convenience of kitchen appliances. I know I am appreciative of my indoor grill. It makes me feel good knowing that a quick burger, chicken breast, or panini is but a button press away. It's useful, easy, and always there for me. With a tethered electrical cord, however, the grill is not very portable.
In a case of an outdoor appliance being inspired by an indoor appliance that was originally inspired by an outdoor appliance, we have this outdoor grill (got all that?). The Coleman Fold N Go InstaStart Grill borrows the … Read more
