Yes, Nokia launched a new Netbook, and yes, Twitter fought the law and won. But it wasn't until the end of today's show that we finally get to the bottom of a long-running controversy: MP3s don't do what they promise. Jason and Brian explain why.

Just listened to 1082 and wanted to comment on the lack of love for the Sony PSP. Don’t get me wrong, Sony has made some crucial errors in the PSP department, but getting rid of the UMD I don’t think is one of them. My albums won’t play in my CD player, so I had to re-buy lots of them, and Apple has thrown out its optical drive every chance it gets. Plus Sony didn’t stop selling the 3000, so if you want a PSP with the UMD you can still purchase one.
Love the show,
Gavin – the TV tech from West Chester PA
P.S. I listen to BOL on my Blackberry 8330 because I can download it OTA at anytime while I check email, surf the web, check facebook, and tweet… All at the same time. So glad my phone can multi-task

Hey Buzz Crew!
I thought you might find it intresting that U2.com is selling both Mp3 and FLAC versions of U2 albums, the only problem is that the FLAC versions are $11.99 for an album while the MP3 version is $9.99.
Just thoguht you might find that cool a mainstream artist is selling their stuff in lossless download form.
The show is pretty cool, and I guess I kind of love it.

Hi Guys and Girls
This new Lightpeek standard sounds awesome but when you’re heads down, bum up in a dark corner because one cable is too short and the network, monitor, mouse and keyboard cables all look the same I think I’ll want to strangle someone. There’s a certain elegance in having a network cable that looks completely different to a DVI cable because my monitor doesn’t understand TCP/IP and my switch won’t go 1080p.

Hello Buzzies!
First: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, and Happy American Columbus Day!
On another note however I would like to say why the Amazon Kindle
sucks overseas. Don’t get me wrong I love the idea of the Kindle,
built in 3G, buy books as you go and it works everywhere! However if I
would like one in the Netherlands (and Europe for that matter) I have
to buy it from Amazon.com and I have to pay in American Dollars. Which
isn’t to bad, heck the Euro/Dollar exchange rate is awesome at the
moment. But here come the terrible parts:
Although Amazon says it works overseas you have to keep this in mind:
- Ships with American Plug/adapter
- 20$ Shipping
- 60$ import costs
- Works through ATT Roaming partners, but you don’t have any roaming
costs (that is what Amazon says, they say US customers overseas pay
1.99$, but say other countries are free). In reality though, the books
(which you also have to pay in American $) are more expensive in the
European Kindle store than in the US kindle store.
- Newspapers are full price, but don’t get delivered with Images and
charts (saving bandwidth)
- The blogs feature is disabled (couldn’t care less)
- The experimental browser is disabled (yes this does suck)
The part that hurts most is the ‘premium’ on books even though Amazon
says no roaming fees (and don’t give the ‘tax’ excuse, because if that
is the case, there would be a Kindle store for every country, instead
of just for Europe. And the part that if I want a newspaper I don’t
get the pretty images and graphs. What’s the point of a newspaper if
they can’t show me any Pie charts?
Amazon did a lousy job, and wants to be easy by making a deal with ATT
Worldwide instead of making deals with carriers in every country. What
they probably should have done was introduce a Wi-Fi Kindle. And
release Kindles with 3G when they had deals in those countries.
I also came across another artist that is spreading his music through the Radiohead model, 'pay what you want $0 is good too'. The artist name is 'Yellowgold' never heard anything about him, but his new album 'The Mellower' is awesome! You can find it here: http://www.yellowgoldmusic.com/ . Good stuff!
Just my 2 cents!

Barnes and Noble creating an android based e-book reader? More like Barnes and Noble creating the first Android based tablet. Google not only gets it’s hand into the e-book market after they have digitized books, but they also get the ability to test and review their android software on non-phone hardware. You can almost guarantee this device will not only read books but allow users to listen to mp3s, browse the Internet via wifi/chrome, and download all apps from the android marketplace. Knowing Google, they will also include you-tube functions as well as the ability to post on blogs and subscribe to rss feeds.

Hi Buzzfolk,
I beg to differ with the slow Windows 7 boot times story you reported on in Episode 1080. I have run a script (on the RTM 32-bit version) that measures the time, from shutdown to usable desktop, multiple times and consistently get a time of 54 seconds, which does jive with the times your lab got in their testing, but not what Lolo Technologies achieved in theirs.
I think the bigger story here is why is Lolo getting slower times?
I’m not saying it’s because they sell PC tune-up software and may have a conflict of interest, I’m just sayin`…..
Thanks! Love the show.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I just wanted to point out that the new international Kindle 2 would be launched in over 100 countries. So pretty much everywhere except Canada. Honestly, are we really that hard to deal with? Or is it just that Amazon Canada seems to be permanently caged into it’s infant stage? Either way, if you live in Burundi in Africa, you can have a kindle. If you live in Cambodia, have a Kindle. Canada? No Kindle for you. If Sony wasn’t the evil empire, I would have a Sony Reader by now.

Hey Buzz-Crew,
In ep 1077 you asked for a CIO/CTO to weigh in on the IBM Inotes vs Goolge Docs hypothetical prize fight for our hypothetical business. While I am not of that stature at my company I do sit right outside the out CIO’s office so I wrestled him down, duct taped him to his chair and made him answer this very question!
Okay, well not really that first part but he did answer and here is what he said:
“We actually looked at Google Docs for cost reduction and there is no way we could use it. With all the customer data that we have and the nature of our business (not to mention internal systems) having something in the cloud would be much to risky. Cloud stuff just isn’t reliable enough for us to even consider using it. Not only that but there was no way that Legal would let us (not to mention that it didn’t clear SOX compliance). And let us not forget about our ‘wonderful’ users. The learning curve that they would have to deal with might just break them.”
So there you have it. The argument against clouds at my company are (1) Reliability, (2) Legal / SOX issues and (3) Inept users.

Hey, Buzz crew,
With all the discussion about mobile OS platforms and developers in
yesterday’s show (episode 1078), I’m surprised you didn’t mention the
announcement Adobe made on Monday about how they’re going to enable
Flash developers to code apps in Flash that can then be converted into
native iPhone apps. Technical merits aside, it’s an interesting move by
Adobe to keep Flash application and game developers from abandoning
Flash to take a swing at developing apps solely for the iPhone, and you
have to wonder if Apple is somewhat annoyed that five iPhone apps
created with this technique made it into the app store.

Hey all,
OK, what bothers me always about saying 4k is this. We have 1080p, which refers to horizontal lines. 4k refers to the vertical lines. Apples versus oranges.
1920×1080 (2,073,600) versus 4096◊2304 ((9,437,184) Shooting quality of the Red One camera)
It’s just said, maybe, to make it sound 4 times better than 1080p. Which, at least, is true, since it’s 4.55x the number of pixels. But, 720p set makers should start calling them 1280 sets, and they can start selling them for more than a 1080p set. Imagine the profit margins! Maybe 1080p set makers will update to start saying they are 2k sets and charge more, for no change.
OK, sorry for the sarcasm, but 4k always annoys me.

Hey Buzz Crew!
In episode 1075, you talked more about OnLive's upcoming gaming service, which will let you play games "in the cloud" using your web browser as a thin client. According to their FAQ (http://www.onlive.com/service/faq.html), you'll need a 1.5Mbps connection for standard def (5Mbps for high def) and a "small browser plug-in." Not quite the magic technology that Tom had in mind, but still really cool.
We've got something similar--online right now, and needing a lot less bandwidth--for scientific computing. We've used the open source VNC (virtual network computing) software to create a web site where nanotechnology researchers can access more than 150 live simulation tools via their web browser. Instead of playing games, they're computing electronic properties of quantum dots and designing transistors made of carbon nanotubes. You can too! Just log on to http://nanoHUB.org . We're using the same software platform to create similar sites for many other areas of science and engineering, including cancer care, pharmaceutical engineering, and microelectromechanical systems. More details at http://hubzero.org .

Hi Folks
I thought I’d share this example of Apple’s ever-reaching IP protection policies. Just as background, Woolworths is Australia’s largest retailer (80% of supermarket business goes through two companies here) and they have interests in electronics, hardware and liquor. This news made front page! I recall Fake Steve Jobs writing that Microsoft is like the Borg. I guess this suggests that perhaps Apple isn’t too far different.

Hey guys, in regards to episode #1076 and the rant about the ‘cyber-’ prefix, I just wanted to throw this in. I’m LDS , and as I was listening to General Conference today (when the church leaders speak and church members worldwide tune in via TV, internet, radio, and satellite broadcasts), one of the speakers (they are almost all older men) mentioned ‘cybertechnology’. I thought ‘what??’
Anyway, I love ya, keep it going.

Buzz Crew,
Great show!
You read an email on your October 1 show from James the Field Engineer about Star Trek Props. I worked in pumps/irrigation sales for a couple of years, and found that Infiltrator (http://www.infiltratorsystems.com/productline/h20_chambers.asp) -brand effluent-irrigation chambers are used very, very heavily in TNG, DS9 and Voyager series. They are used as wall support structures and decorations on walls in many diverse sets. As a guy who worked with the stuff every day, it became very distracting to see it in reruns. But it was clever, I’ll give ‘em that.
Also, in about every third episode, an away team would land on a planet, and in the settlement on that planet would be the same, identical trussed lighting-support structure (like for stadium lights, just lighter duty) right in the middle of the village. It would always go up past the camera frame and, presumably, be holding the set lights. But they made it look like it was the aliens’ normal technology. For every alien culture ever.
You won’t possibly care about this enough to read it on air, but Tom might get a kick out of it if he recognizes the Infiltrator linked stuff in various sizes on old STTNG reruns.

In the U.K., you don't have to be in the presence of someone to serve them with legal papers. So now Twitter has become a way to get served. We also are happy that the U.S. government is taking cybersecurity seriously, but maybe they could lay off with the cyber prefix a little. And we try to care more about the Palm Pixi. We really do.

Tom,
In BOL 1075, you and Rafe were discussing props in sci-fi movies. This reminded me of my favorite recent example.
During a forced rewatching of Phantom Menace, I noticed something oddly familiar about Liam Neeson’s little communicator thingie. On closer look, it was clearly my wife’s Gillette Ladies Sensor Excell Razor Handle (which I see on the shower shelf every day) painted silver with a couple nub antennae stuck on the top.

I suspect Buzztown can come up with dozens of even better examples.

Hi! I’m Tushar, from Ludhiana, India and probably the only listener in the town!!!
A couple of days ago When I checked in my facebook page, I was redirected to their lite.facebook.com page
and the cool thing was that I couldn’t revert back to the normal page!!!
On doing some research I came to know that it was a problem with a couple other users back here in India where facebook randomly picked them as their beta testers for lite.facebook.com but we all CANNOT go back to the normal facebook!!!!
Please read this e-mail on the show so the facebook guys at least know that we wanna go back, cause we people tried ( http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=129521886143&topic=13597 ) but its been a week but no-one from facebook replied or gave us the option to revert back
P.S. – facebook lite is cool for some users who do not want any clutter but it should not be mandatory for all!!!

Hey BOL,
In episode 1072 you played RougeTess’s voicemail regarding PayPal security
using the keychain security key. I jumped on the bandwagon early, and have
had one since they were introduced.
I hate to say it, but this cool little gizmo does not provide as much
security as it seems at first glance. Sometime between when I got mine
almost two years ago and now, PayPal totally neutered the functionality by
providing a “I don’t have it with me” bypass link, where you can supply
your credit card number, checking account number, or *gasp*, answer a
traditional pre-defined security question.
Yes, it’s better than username/password alone, but it’s not as good as it
used to be or could be. And it’s definitely not true second-factor
authentication.

Hey BOLers, James the field engineer from Michigan. In episode 1074
you mentioned seeing modern day tech in the new Star Trek movie. Well
I embarrassed my wife and impressed my twelve year old when I saw two
of the above Symbol M2004 hand scanners on the bridge of the
Enterprise! My son was even more impressed when I showed him one I
keep as a spare in my service truck. Now we just use them to ring up
customers at our chain of gas stations but I guess in the “future”
you’ll be able to fly a starship with them, my son can’t wait. Love
the show. James

Hey Buzz Out Loud Crew,
I just wanted to send you a short message. I am a Palm Pre user, and I first started listening to your show when I downloaded a Homebrew app called drPodder. It monitors the RSS feeds for lots of podcasts and can be set to auto-download and queue up podcasts for later listening. One of the default podcasts for this application happens to be your show. This is what got me hooked on your show, and probably did the same to a number of other Palm Pre users.
Thanks for carrying news regarding the Palm Pre, I love hearing the occasional blurb about technology I use. Love the show, please keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Darin Boots
While the Apple Tablet is much more fashionable to hype, the Microsoft Courier turns out to be very hype-worthy. We also find out, once again, that Rafe knows where he works. And the U.S. has relaxed its grip on the Internet. Good thing? Bad thing? Irrelevant thing? Or over-hyped thing like an Apple tablet?

The bigger unreported piece of Google creating a Google Docs for students is the development of college students using their technolgy. If google is going to get a larger share of the marketplace over Microsoft Office, they will need to develop future workers who demand to use their software.
This is a major of the reason behind software companies offering steep discounts for college students to purchase their software. If you only know how to do something with their software, you will be more likely to purchase or request your business to purchase the software program in your future place of employment. -ccarline

Hey bol,
On Friday you open your show and spend the first five minute on how Palm is in trouble because Verizon wasn’t going to carry the Pre.
Well, according to a Verizon VP they still are, and according to the Register, maybe even an updated Pre.
So how about an update on BOL? I guess 3 days later is all we can hope for, after all its not like an apple tablet rumors hasn’t been talked to death.

You guys are great.
