How to record from CD to MiniDisc

Transferring CDs to MiniDisc is the number one reason that people buy MiniDisc recorders. These discs hold the same amount of audio information as CDs (74 minutes), making it simple to duplicate a CD onto a MiniDisc. But a MiniDisc recorder will also let you rearrange tracks copied from a CD. Better yet, it's possible to create a mix of songs from various CDs so that you can carry your favorites wherever you go. And when you get tired of your mix, you can just record over it. What more could you ask for?

Follow these simple steps

1
Plan your recording
Plan your recording. If it's a straight dub to MiniDisc, your work is done. But if you're creating a mix from several CDs or rearranging the order of the original CD, take the time to figure out your CD player's program mode in advance.

2
Connect your CD player to your MiniDisc
Connect your CD player to your MiniDisc. You can make a traditional analog recording by connecting a cable between your CD player's line-out and your MiniDisc recorder's line-in. If your CD player is equipped with a digital output, you can make a digital recording to your MiniDisc. In this case, you'd connect a compatible digital cable between your CD player's digital-out and the MiniDisc recorder's optical-in.

3
Set up your MiniDisc to record
Set up your MiniDisc to record. Some MiniDisc recorders have an automatic record level, while others allow you to set your own levels. You may want to do a test recording to be sure that your levels aren't too high.

4
Record the CD
Now that you have everything set up, hit Record on your MiniDisc unit and begin playback on your CD player. If your MiniDisc recorder features synchro-recording mode, it will start recording as soon as it senses input. It will also anticipate the silence between the tracks on your CD and create a new track when the next selection starts.

5
Test your recording
After you're done, play back your newly recorded MiniDisc to test its quality. This is a good time to create a label and a table of contents in order to keep your MiniDisc collection organized.

Tips
You can record digitally from your PC to your MiniDisc.

To make sure that the pauses are long enough to force the MiniDisc to separate tracks, hit the Pause button on your CD player briefly when a song ends.
