Six devices for Napster's hot to-go service

I have to admit--when subscription-based music services from the likes of RealNetworks (Rhapsody) and Napster first became popular, I was generally unimpressed. How many people really want to pay a monthly fee to just listen to music on their computer? Then several Rhapsody-capable network media devices became available, with Napster-friendly DMRs coming later, and my spirits lifted slightly; at least now you could stream subscription content to your stereo--better but still not ideal. Finally, Windows Media DRM 10.0 (then code-named Janus) emerged, offering a way for music subscription services to offer their tunes "to go" on capable devices. Now we're talking. At $14.95 per month, Napster To Go is the first service up and running with the new DRM, and after using it for just two weeks, I must say that it's a surprisingly entertaining way to enjoy music and discover new tunes or rediscover those from the past. Currently, relatively few devices support Napster To Go content, but that doesn't mean you don't have options. Read on for a comparison of several gadgets that will play back this subscription content on the go. Here's another tip: Check Napster's Web site for deals on the iRiver H10 and the Creative Zen Micro Photo.

Review summary As iRiver's first 5GB entry, the H10 includes nearly every coveted feature, but navigating the player controls can frustrate some users. Aside from the tiny buttons and some e-mail issues, Audiovox's SMT5600 is a fantastic smart phone. Call quality is good, it's well constructed, and its display is magnificent. The Creative Zen Micro Photo is an excellent full-featured MP3 player and, for its size, a decent photo viewer; it just doesn't combine the two effectively. Toshiba adds some useful technology and features not found on the iPod, but too many unnecessary limitations, sloppy software, and counterintuitive ergonomics add up to a wasted opportunity. With its many features as well as its compatibility with audiobooks and subscription-based music, the SanDisk Sansa m200 series is an overall great value. The Creative Zen Vision, a dazzling but occasionally frustrating personal media player, handles video and music with aplomb, all for a tantalizingly low price.
