Pocket PC 2003: Improvements to networking
Hold onto your handhelds--Pocket PC 2003 is here. Get the lowdown on its improvements and how to upgrade.

Easier to connect
Microsoft makes it simpler to connect to wireless networks with what it calls Zero Configuration. When one or more networks are detected, a connection bubble pops up, letting you quickly choose a network. A new Connection Manager simplifies configuring connections, offering explanations of each step; further instruction is accessible by tapping a help icon.

Microsoft has automated the network-connection process and made the pop-up dialog boxes a little less cryptic. (Click to enlarge.)

Security enhancements
Users interested in connecting to a corporate network via VPN will be happy to learn that security has been strengthened in PPC 2003. Microsoft has added support for IPSec L2TP, a tunneling protocol that provides secure communication over the Internet. There's also built-in support for 128-bit encryption, which was available for Pocket PC 2002 via a downloadable file.

Bolstered Bluetooth
Bluetooth functionality has been similarly boosted. Users with a Bluetooth PDA may now connect with other Bluetooth-enabled devices in a number of ways, including exploring other devices, setting up a personal network, partnering with a cell phone, or connecting to a desktop either for syncing or accessing the Internet. You may even beam data such as contact files to other devices via Bluetooth.
