RCA's bargain digital TV
January 10, 2005; 11:39 a.m.
![]() The product: Even "cheap" HDTVs often cost north of $500--and that's too expensive for the majority of TV shoppers. RCA offers a compelling compromise: its line of SDTV sets pair an ATSC tuner with the same 480i standard-definition resolution as your current TV. It won't offer better resolution, but it will show DVD-quality images for all digital broadcasts.
The prospects: It's not an HD picture, but at the 27- to 32-inch screen size, you'll be hard-pressed to tell the difference between HDTV and DVD anyway. At this rock-bottom price, RCA is essentially giving away the built-in HD tuner for free. The SDTV line looks to be a great opportunity for shoppers to get an entry-level HD experience without breaking the bank. By John P. Falcone, senior associate editor, CNET Reviews CES DEBUTS BY BRAND
