CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Panasonic HTIBs go wireless
January 8, 2005; 1:57 p.m.
Panasonic SC-HT930
The product: Sony, Pioneer, and Samsung were among the big-name manufacturers that launched home-theater systems with wireless rear speakers in 2004. Now Panasonic joins the club. Unlike its competitors, however, the industry giant is offering its wireless speakers as separate add-ons to new versions of earlier, popular HTIBs. The SC-HT930, for instance, is nearly identical to the well-regarded SC-HT920, except that it includes built-in compatibility for the optional wireless rear-speaker package--should you choose to purchase it.

The price: Available in April for $499.

The prospects: The dirty secret of home-theater systems is that many people never even connect the rear speakers--they can't deal with those two long cables snaking to the back of the room. Panasonic's two-part wireless system will offer additional flexibility for such consumers. We just hope the sound quality is up to snuff; many cable-less systems just can't approximate the dependability of a hard-wired connection.
