CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Panasonic's next-gen hard drive DVD recorder
January 8, 2005; 1:30 p.m.
Panasonic DMR-EH50
The product: Panasonic has been at the forefront of consumer DVD recorders since the category's inception, and the company continues to refine its lineup with every successive generation. The latest models--spearheaded by the DMR-EH50, which can also record video to its internal 100GB hard disk--now record on DVD-RW and DVD+R discs, in addition to DVD-R and DVD-RAM.
  • DVD/hard drive combo recorder
  • TV Guide onscreen EPG
  • 100GB hard disk stores up to 177 hours of video
  • Records on DVD-R/RW, DVD+R, and DVD-RAM discs
The prospects: Panasonic and HP have teamed up to help thaw the DVD format war, with Panasonic adding +R and -RW support in exchange for HP making its new PCs friendly to Panasonic's versatile DVD-RAM format. That's great news, but we wonder why Panasonic left DVD+RW support out in the cold.
