Tube TVs go on a diet
January 8, 2005; 2:06 p.m.
![]() The product: Despite offering better performance, tube-based (CRT) HDTVs don't inspire the same lusty appeal as the sexy flat-panel plasma and LCD models. Samsung's TXR3079WH aims to reverse that trend by squeezing a 30-inch wide-screen HD tube into a body that's just 15.5 inches deep--one-third smaller than earlier tube-based models of the same screen size. It also has a built-in ATSC tuner. The price: $1,199; available March 2005. The prospects: You won't be able to mount it on the wall, but given that the TXR3079WH's $1,200 asking price is about half that of similarly sized LCD screens, that's an easy pill to swallow. Look for slimmer, slickly designed CRTs--Samsung's Korean rival, LG, has also announced a 30-inch model--to breathe new life into the entry-level HDTV market. By John P.
