| CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW: CNET editors cover the Next Big Thing
![]() TiVo To Go finally takes off January 8, 2005; 2:08 p.m. ![]() The product: Promised since the last CES, TiVo has finally delivered on its TiVo To Go feature. The free software upgrade allows most users of standard TiVo DVRs to transfer their recorded programs to any PC on their home network. You can, for instance, watch those back episodes of American Idol on your laptop during your next business trip. And once a customized version of Sonic's recording software becomes available, TiVo is promising the ability to permanently archive programs to DVD. The price: Free for applicable TiVo users with Windows PCs (service not available on DirecTV TiVo DVRs). The prospects: Whether you' want to watch last week's TiVo recordings in your bedroom or at 30,000 feet, the attraction of TiVo To Go is readily apparent. The promised ability to burn to DVD will make the deal even sweeter, but the potentially ominous DRM restrictions--which let TV networks and Hollywood studios determine which shows and movies you can save and for how long--may very well leave you unable to watch your favorites.
