CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Sharp's budget-priced flat-panel home-theater-in-a-box system
January 8, 2005; 12:05 p.m.
Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote
Sharp HT-X1
The product: Continuing to evolve its lifestyle audio systems, Sharp has developed the HT-X1, an inexpensive all-in-one home-theater system that you can fit on a narrow shelf or mount on a wall (the back of the unit is equipped with keyhole slots--no bracket required). Other features include:

  • Removable speaker stands
  • Single-disc DVD player
  • 300 watts of power
  • Plays DVD, DVD-Video, CD, CD-R/RW, and MP3
  • Dolby Digital, Dolby ProLogic II, and DTS decoding are onboard
The price: The HT-X1 will be available in spring 2005 for a manufacturer suggested retail price of $229.99.

The prospects: We don't know if it sounds good, but it looks nice--and the price is right. Sharp hopes you'll pick one up with one of its modestly sized Aquos sets to add surround sound to a smaller room.
