CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Canon releases limber scanner
January 7, 2005; 5:54 p.m.
Canon LiDE 500F
The product: The ultrathin, silver Canon LiDE 500F opens four different ways to fit your whim. Prop it up on its built-in scanner stand, and the shell yawns 40 degrees wide so that you can drop in a scan-ready item. Lay the scanner flat in Portrait mode, and it opens at a 110-degree angle. You can even open it 180 degrees to scan big items. Need to fit a paperback on the glass? Just expand the scanner's spine by an inch. You can still scan in traditional flatbed Landscape mode. The LiDE 500F also offers:
  • A USB 2.0 port
  • 2,400x4,800 resolution
  • Compatibility with Windows 98 and up and Mac OS X 10.2 and up
  • A film adapter that enables you to scan negatives
The price: $129.99

The prospects: This scanner's design is fun and sexy. How well does it scan? We hope it improves upon the fair LiDE 80, whose form was better than its functionality.
