CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Cobra unveils 12-mile-range two-way radio
January 7, 2005; 4:35 p.m.
Cobra MicroTalk two-way radios
The product: Cobra introduced a new line of MicroTalk GMRS/FRS two-way radios at CES this year and claims that its top-of-the-line model, the PR 4700-2 WX, has a 12-mile range. The unit also features 22 channels, 2,662 privacy combinations (38 privacy codes, 83 DCS codes), and an NOAA weather radio. More highlights include:

  • Vox hands-free operation
  • VibrAlert silent paging
  • 10-channel memory
  • Switchable power levels for battery optimization
The price: The PR 4700-2 WX, as well as the rest of the MicroTalk line, will be available in April. The PR 4700-2 WX runs $69.95 for a two-pack. Other models in the line include the PR 3500-2 DX ($59.95 per two-pack), the PR 250-2 WX ($49.95 per two-pack), PR 150-2 ($29.95 per two-pack).

The prospects: The Cobra PR 4700-2 WX is a full-feature, two-way radio, and if it can live up to its 12-mile-range promise, the device will be a powerful communication device. However, these radios typically undershoot their range, so we'll have to withhold judgment until we get it in for testing. With the variety of features available, you should be able to find a model to fit your needs.
