CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Label CDs, DVDs, and more with Casio's CW-L300
January 7, 2005; 2:18 p.m.
Casio CW-L300 disc and label printer
The product: If your homemade CDs and DVDs suffer from your illegible handwriting, here's relief. The Casio CW-L300 prints black text on discs, plus it creates sticky labels that you can slap onto digital media, file folders, or your messy drawers. This thermal printer prints up to eight lines of 200dpi black text in five fonts and 14 European languages. To make labels without your computer, you can type into its built-in QWERTY keyboard, or you can connect the printer via a USB cable to your PC. The CW-L300 takes up 8.5 by 9.7 inches on your desk, stands 3.5 inches high, and connects to your PC via a USB cable. Power the printer with its AC adapter or add an eight-AA-battery option.

The price: $149.99

The prospects: The CW-L300 should suffice if marking CDs and DVDs with text is all you need. But without graphics capabilities, its price seems steep, unless you're an organization hound or a filing fanatic. Digital artists might find the professional touch of printed text worthwhile for sharing discs with clients.
