CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Double the Bluetooth with the Plantronics L510
January 7, 2005; 1:30 p.m.
Plantronics L510
The product: Bluetooth may be great, but if you don't have a Bluetooth phone, you're out of luck. Fortunately, Plantronics has an answer with its L510 Bluetooth headset. The L510 can be used not only with a mobile, but the desktop charger also doubles as a Bluetooth adapter for a landline phone. When a call comes in on your landline, an additional component will lift the landline handset, and the call will be patched through to the headset with the press of a button. Alternately, when a call comes in via your mobile, it can be picked up using the cell phone. The headset is extremely light and comfortable with a behind-the-ear fit and a sleek style that won't make you look like a telemarketer. A short boom mic helps capture your voice and folds away for easy storage. Plantronics promises six hours of talk time and five days of standby time.

The price: $49 to $79 for headset only; $249 to $299 for headset with adapters

The prospects: Plantronics earns points for combining useful features with a comfortable fit. Also, we like the sleek design that is far less geeky than other Bluetooth headsets'. While we can't comment on the audio quality yet, if the L510's performance measures up, it could be a winner.
