CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Philips's supercompact MP3 boombox
January 7, 2005; 12:18 p.m.
Philips PSS110 MP3 Personal Surround System
The product: Several companies, including Bose, have put out Apple iPod speaker accessories. Now Philips ups the ante by building MP3 playback right into the speakers, no iPod necessary. The PSS110 MP3 Personal Sound System is a supercompact stereo boombox that comes with 256MB of built-in memory but, alas, no slot for an additional memory card. Features include:
  • MP3 and WMA playback
  • Weighs 350 grams
  • Can be used as speakers for any music player
  • 10 hours of battery life from built-in rechargeable cell
  • Connects to PC via USB
  • FM tuner
  • Traveling case included
  • Firmware upgradable
  • Built-in clock/alarm
The prospects: Though we wish it had a slot for adding more memory, this stylish mini boomer makes a lot of sense and should be among Philips's best-selling products when it arrives sometime in 2005.
