Toshiba introduces new tablet PC
January 7, 2005; 4:20 p.m.
![]() The product: Toshiba unveiled its latest tablet PC at the 2005 CES. The new Toshiba R15-S822, which launches at the end of February, is the company's second foray into the tablet PC market. The R15-S822 includes support for Intel's next-generation Pentium M platform, code-named Sonoma. The system also comes with a 14.1-inch display, a DVD/CD-RW optical disc drive, a 60GB hard drive, and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. This system's form factor is larger than that of Toshiba's previous tablet PC, and while it's still relatively thin, the R15-S822 also felt quite a bit heavier than the old tablet. The price: No price point released. The prospects: Although Toshiba's latest entry shows architecture improvements over the previous version, it is also larger and heavier. It remains to be seen whether, in the eyes of consumers, that fact will defeat the purpose of owning a tablet PC. By Eric Franklin, assistant labs manager, CNET Reviews CES DEBUTS BY BRAND
