CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Transport the party with Altec Lansing's latest mobile audio
system

January 7, 2005; 11:42 a.m.
Altec Lansing InMotion iM4
The product: Altec Lansing refreshes its line of InMotion portable speakers with the new iM4 speaker system. Otherwise very similar to the company's previous iM3 model, which are designed specifically for Apple's überpopular iPod, the iM4 are device agnostic. In fact, the speaker system will accommodate as many as two audio sources at once via a handy retractable cable. Using the company?s patented MaxxBass technology, Altec Lansing claims that the 4-watt stereo iM4 packs a surprising amount of bass despite its lack of a subwoofer. The speakers can be powered by the included AC adapter or four AA batteries when you're away from an outlet.

The price: $129.95

The prospects: Having a dedicated speaker system for your portable player that?s easy to carry around with you is truly a luxury, and the iM4 appears to accomplish this task well. The ability to hook up multiple devices such as a CD and a digital jukebox is also a nice feature. However, we hope the iM4?s doesn't suffer from the same disappointing sound quality that plagued its predecessor.
