CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Truly's HD900 stands out with advanced features and an
affordable pricing aim

January 7, 2005; 10:32 a.m.
Truly HD900
The product: Since Apple introduced the iPod Mini early last year, a host of self-proclaimed Mini killers have hit the market. While all of these players stand out from the Apple in one way or another--mostly by offering an extra gigabyte of storage at the same price point--advanced features such as line-in recording are notably absent (with the exception of the MobiBlu DHH-100-5, which was announced late last year). Truly steps up to the plate with the HD900, which offers direct MP3 encoding via line-in as well as a 64,000-color screen for viewing photos. Other features include:
  • 5GB microdrive
  • MP3, WMA (DRM compatible), M3U playlist, and Ogg Vorbis support
  • USB 2.0
  • Direct connect to other MP3 players and digital cameras; acts as a USB host, so no PC needed
  • SD/MMC memory expansion slot
  • FM tuner and recording
  • E-book/ASCII, Unicode, and text files supported
  • Games
The price: Truly is aiming for a sub-$200 list price.

The prospects: Depending on final price, usability, and sound quality (the last Truly player we listened to, the MP301, sounded impressive), the HD900 could be poised to knock its competitors down a peg or two.
