![]() Clifford AvantGuard 5.5X: the ultimate car alarm? January 7, 2005; 10:05 a.m. ![]() The product: Think of it as a baby monitor for your car. Clifford's AvantGuard 5.5X keychain controller for your Clifford remote control looks more like a mini PalmPilot than a remote control, and it can alert you if somebody's tampering with your car when it's up to a mile away--which, of course, brings up the question: how fast can you run a mile? The remote itself has a fully programmable dot-matrix display, plus two-way operation so that you can also unlock your car, start it, read the car's tilt sensor (so you can tell if your ride is being towed), and more. You can even remotely control the sensitivity of the proximity sensor. The prospects: Traditionally, new automotive technology shows up first in aftermarket products such as this, then wends its way onto the option lists of cars from manufacturers. This happened with the first car alarms. Will we see this trend again with Clifford's spread-spectrum alarm technology and remote-starting capability? Since manufacturers are battling each other more than ever on electronics, it's a good bet we will. By Rafe Needleman, editor, CNET Reviews CES DEBUTS BY BRAND
