Toshiba does TV Guide
HDD/DVD-R combo January 10, 2005; 9:07 a.m.
![]() The product: The TV Guide electronic program guide (EPG) is making serious headway among DVD recorders and DVRs at CES, and Toshiba's RD-XS34 is another example. Unlike earlier Toshiba combos, this combination DVD-R/hard disk recorder offers TV Guide's free EPG instead of TiVo's subscription-based one. The problem is, TV Guide hasn't worked well with digital cable systems in our experience. The RD-XS34 also features an Easy Navi portal menu to help make recording easier.
The prospects: We haven't been incredibly impressed by the performance of TV Guide, and that's the major issue with this unit. On the other hand, this unit costs less than similar combo recorders from Pioneer and Sony, which should help its popularity. By David Katzmaier, senior editor, CNET Reviews CES DEBUTS BY BRAND
