CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
U.S. Robotics announces new
long-range router

January 10, 2005; 9:15 a.m.
U.S. Robotics MAXg router
U.S. Robotics Maxg router
The product: The U.S. Robotics Maxg router is tailored for home-office and small-business networks. The router's well-rounded security options give telecommuters and small offices the protection they need, and its custom SureStart installation wizard guarantees a fast, foolproof setup. A built-in 802.11g access point provides for wireless connectivity, and an integrated print server sets the Maxg router apart from its competitors. You can even access the print server via the Internet and use your printer in place of your fax machine. Other new features and key specs include:

  • USB 2.0 printer port
  • Support for universal plug and play
  • Supports multiple wireless security schemes, including 802.11i, WPA2, WPA, and WEP
  • VPN pass-through
  • Supports IPP (Internet Printing Protocol)
The price: U.S. Robotics expects to start shipping its Maxg router in the first quarter of 2005. It comes with a very competitive price of $69.99.

The prospects: Router/print-server combinations make a lot of sense. You typically want your printer attached to a device that is always on and available via the network, such as a router. The router's advanced encryption options are in step with the security needs of small businesses and home offices. All things considered, this looks like a well-rounded and very reasonably priced router.
