CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Creative makes dreams come
true for wire haters everywhere

January 8, 2005; 2:10 p.m.
Creative Zen Micro headphones
The product: Although Creative's Zen Micro headphones still need some work in the design department, we were able to get a listen to a working prototype. And guess what? They sound good. Hallelujah! We've been waiting for this day for what seems like ages, and with good reason. Up to now, available wireless technologies (that is, Bluetooth and RF) have been used successfully for mono audio such as cell phone headsets, but interference issues, combined with size and weight factors, rendered them unacceptable for decent audio sound quality. Thanks to new technology from Aura LibertyLink called magnetic induction, the Zen Micro wireless headphones suffer from neither poor sound quality nor interference. In fact, the very low-frequency technology even expands and contracts depending on your proximity to anyone else who's also using the 'phones. Other features include:
  • A choice of 10 colors to match the Zen Micro
  • Rated battery life of 30 hours from a single AAA
  • No audio delay (to avoid out-of-sync A/V when using with PVPs)
The price: $149

The prospects: Headphones with no wires, no interference, and great sound? Where do I sign up? We're still curious to see how the final design turns out--comfort is definitely a factor--but it's looking good so far.
