![]() Roku showcases a slimmed-down SoundBridge at CES January 7, 2005; 3:54 p.m. ![]() The product: Joining Roku's $499.99 SoundBridge M2000 and $249.99 M1000 wireless music players, the M500 is a cut-down version for the cost-conscious. While the same size as the M1000, the new unit trades in the other versions' vacuum fluorescent display for a two-line LCD. Like its older siblings, the M500 can stream a wide variety of audio file formats to your home stereo system, including secure Windows Media files purchased from online services such as Napster and Musicmatch.
The prospects: For those who don't mind using an LCD, the M500 has the same basic capabilities as the M1000, for $50 less. While that price is still a bit high for wireless music players, few look as stylish as the SoundBridge, which also gets points for its broad file-format support, in part because of its support for Apple iTunes and Slim Devices SlimServer applications. Unfortunately, like all wireless music players except the Apple AirPort Express, the M500 can't stream files purchased from Apple's iTunes Music Store.
