January 6, 2005; 12:05 p.m.
![]() The product: The Estone Car MP3 Player is a new head unit with a neat twist. In addition to playing music and MP3 CDs and receiving AM and FM radio, it can rip music CDs directly to its own 20GB hard disk. So now, after you play a CD in your car the first time, you can retire it to cold storage. The hard disk is also removable, and you can connect it to your PC through a USB cable, which makes it easier to manage your collection. The price: $650 The prospects: It's a cool idea but unlikely to remain unique for long. Also, Estone is a new brand, and it remains to be seen if the company will get traction in the market.
