CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Sennheiser's RS140 RF wireless headphones with virtual surround
January 6, 2005; 11:50 a.m.
Sennheiser RS140 RF
The product: Sennheiser has announced two new RF 900MHz wireless headphones designed for those of us who want to watch TV or listen to music at night without disturbing the rest of the family. The more expensive RS140 has a closed-back design (no sound leaks) and slightly better sound quality, while the RS130 has an open-back design. Both incorporate SRS Headphone virtual-sound technology for movie listening and come with a base station that recharges the included nickel-metal-hydride batteries.
  • Closed-back design, so no sound leakage
  • 900MHz wireless, so no line of sight required
  • Intelligent tuning system that chooses the best of three base-to-headset channels available
  • Up to 23 hours of usage from one charge of integrated nickel-metal-hydride batteries
  • Base station/charger included
The price: The RS140 will be available in March for a suggested retail price of $219.95.

The prospects: Wireless headphones are becoming increasingly popular, and this moderately priced high-performance model should have a lot of appeal for late-night TV and movie watchers.
