CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
iRiver enters 5GB MP3 territory
with a sleek color player

January 7, 2005; 11:05 a.m.
iRiver H10
The product: iRiver has finally joined the microdrive-based market with its exciting 5GB H10. The supersleek H10 boasts a color screen and can display photos as well as play MP3 and protected WMAs. Available in four different color schemes, the H10 also features a decent FM radio tuner, a voice and FM recorder, and an intuitive interface that is built around a Creative Zen Micro-like vertical touch pad. Specs include:
  • Measures 3.8 by 2.2 by 0.6 inches and weighs a mere 3.4 ounces
  • Simultaneous photo viewing and music listening
  • Supports SRS Wow audio
  • USB 2.0
  • Line-in recording using the dock (not included)
  • Removable, rechargeable battery
  • PlaysForSure device plays protected content and next-generation DRM subscription-based downloads (Janus compatible)
  • Rated 12-hour battery life
The price: $279

The prospects: The price tag is about $30 more than most 5GB competitors, so, at first glance, the H10 doesn't seem to have value. But it's one of the most feature-filled microdrive players on the market with FM tuning, a voice recorder, and a removable battery, and it's also the first 5GB model to support photo viewing. Couple that with a simple two-button, one-touch strip interface as well as file and DRM compatibility and you have a serious contender in the portable audio category.
