CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Pioneer's do-it-all DVD player
January 5, 2005; 6:15 p.m.
Pioneer DV-588A-S
Pioneer DV-588A-S
The product: We liked Pioneer's universal player from last year, the DV-563A, and this year's version looks even more versatile. The DV-588A-S can still play both SACD and DVD-Audio discs but adds DivX compatibility and the ability to play back WMA and MP3 files and display JPEG photos. Naturally, it's also progressive scan.

  • Single-disc DVD player
  • Handles DVD-Audio and SACD
  • WMA and MP3 playback
  • JPEG photo viewing
The price: The DV-588A-S should sell for about $199 when it's released this April.

The prospects: With the myriad formats available on 5-inch discs these days, it's always nice to have a player that can handle just about everything. Realistically, however, most users don't require this level of compatibility.
