CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Samsung A890 sports EVDO
January 5, 2005; 5:05pm
Samsung A890
The product: Samsung's 2005 cell phone lineup promises a number of firsts in available features. Among these phones is the A890, which is the company's EVDO phone for the United States. Running on a CDMA network, the handset will offer faster data speeds for downloading and data services. Also included are an oversized high-resolution display, a 1.3-megapixel camera with MPEG-4 video recorder, and voice recognition. All these features are packed into a compact flip design.
  • 1.3-megapixel camera with flash
  • 260,000-color display
  • Voice recognition
  • MPEG-4 video recording
  • Support for EDGE data speeds
  • Swiveling camera lens
The prospects: The Samsung A890 brings a lot to the table with its support for a high-speed EVDO data network. Its ultimate performance, however, will depend on the quality and the geographic availability of the carrier's EDGE network. If the carrier (not known at press time) can deliver on the speeds, the A890 will be a step ahead. It also benefits from the added multimedia capabilities.
