CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Minolta color laser aims to break
photo printing barrier

January 5, 2005; 2:42 p.m.
Konica Minolta Magicolor 2430DL
winner The product: Witness the Konica Minolta Magicolor 2430DL, the first laser printer to include a PictBridge 1.0 port for printing photos straight from a digital camera. No vendor has been bold enough to label a laser printer as photo-friendly--until now. Printer shoppers have been stuck with choosing either a laser for text or an inkjet for photos. If this Magicolor produces frameworthy photos, it could blur the line between lasers and inkjets, radically reshaping the printing landscape. The 2430DL's affordability and its print speeds of 5ppm for color and 20ppm for text will likely attract more color-graphics-hungry small businesses and home users fed up with the high cost of color-inkjet cartridge refills and photo paper. Other features:
  • Up to 2,400x600dpi resolution
  • USB 2.0 and Ethernet ports
  • 32MB of RAM expandable to 544MB
  • Windows, Mac, and Linux compatibility
The price: For both workplace and personal users, $499 is a deal for this color laser.

The prospects: We can't wait to get our paws on this color laser to test its photo quality.
