CES 2005: The Next Big Thing
Samsung P777 has more memory
January 5, 2005; 6:30 p.m.
Samsung P777
The product: While many cell phones now support MP3s, their usefulness has been limited by their integrated memory, which does nothing to rival standalone MP3 players. At CES, however, Samsung ups the ante by introducing its new P777 handset. With an integrated memory capacity of 100MB, the triband (GSM 850/1800/900; EDGE) mobile offers more space for your files. Though it lacks an expandable memory slot, it can hold as much as 60 minutes of audio or video from the integrated 1.3-megapixel camera and camcorder.

  • Samsung's first EDGE phone in the United States
  • 100MB integrated memory
  • 1.3-megapixel camera
  • MPEG-4 camcorder with light and dedicated microphone
  • Slider design and 262,000-color display
  • MP3 player
  • Supports e-mail, text, and multimedia messages
  • USB and infrared ports
The prospects: The P777 has an attractive combination of both design and features. The loads of integrated memory promise to render its MP3 functionality useful, but we would have preferred an expandable memory slot, too. Still, with EDGE capability and a 1.3-megapixel camera, the handset should do well. We just hope it can make calls well.
