Avoid buyer's remorse
(December 24, 2004)

I'm in a rush to buy gifts. How can I make sure I don't mess it up, and if I do, how can I can return them?

The smartest way to avoid buyer's remorse is to make sure you're familiar with the details of a store's return policy before you buy. Many electronics stores have policies that vary for the different types of merchandise. Most won't take returns on opened software or CDs, for example, and some charge restocking fees on certain products, such as laptops and digital cameras, if you return them when they're not damaged or defective.
Look for at least a 30-day, money-back return policy, and if you're shopping online, note whether the clock starts ticking on the ship date or the delivery date. Some stores extend their policy during the holidays. Amazon.com, for example, will accept returns as late as January 31, 2005, for items shipped between November 1 and December 31, 2004.
