Who can challenge the iPod?

I wanted to buy a cool hard drive-based player as a Christmas present. I have been looking at the Apple iPod, but it just seems a bit pricey. Are there any other players as good as the iPod, and if yes, which ones are they, and how much are they?

We're assuming that you don't have a preference for either the AAC or the WMA format. At $299, the 20GB iPod is actually not a bad deal. But if you're pinching pennies, look to the 20GB Creative Zen Touch, which has an average street price that's less than $250. The new Dell DJ-20 is also a relative steal at $249.
