Best laptop for students
(December 16, 2004)

I'm a college student looking for a laptop that can do everything my desktop PC can: music, Internet, photos, and other basic tasks. I want to be able to take it all over campus, and battery life is the most important thing to me, but I'm also interested in performance and longevity. Thanks.

Most college students need a notebook that's both small and light enough to lug around campus and optimized for long trips away from a wall socket.
Generally, a thin-and-light notebook will give you the best combination of portability and battery life.
The Panasonic ToughBook Y2, for example, delivers solid performance, a complete set of features, and five hours of battery life in a remarkably light 3.3-pound package. You can also find some less expensive options on CNET's list of top thin-and-light notebooks.
Oh, and one more thing: if you have a lot of music and photo files, make sure you get a laptop with at least 60GB of hard drive capacity.
