It all depends on the source of high-definition programming you're using. If you don't have a high-def source now, you can go with regular S-Video and watch standard-definition TV from your DirecTV box.
If you have a high-definition DirecTV receiver, such as the
HD TiVo, you can use a component-video cable to connect your satellite box to your TV and enjoy high-def. If you're routing video through a receiver, you'll need more than one such cable.
If your TV is equipped with an HDMI or DVI input and your box has a matching output, you should use that connection, which means buying an HDMI cable or a DVI-to-HDMI cable (depending on what input your TV has). The DirecTV HD TiVo comes with an HDMI cable.
In general, try to use the best possible connection for high-def.
Here's a list of all video connections, ranked in order of video quality.
