Exceptional image quality and fast performance--you don't ask for much, do you? It's good to have standards.
Although it seems a simple enough request, the technology just isn't there yet for snapshot cameras. The best combination in a prosumer camera is currently the 6-megapixel
Canon EOS Digital Rebel.
If you want something cheaper and smaller, you can try the 4-megapixel
Konica Minolta Dimage Z2 or the 6-megapixel
Kodak EasyShare DX7630.
Though the Kodak has a higher resolution than you indicated, it's priced like a 5-megapixel camera. Neither model will deliver stellar image quality, but they both provide a balance of fast performance and solid photos.
