DVD recorders
(December 1, 2004)

I want to buy a DVD recorder for my home-theater system. Which brands have the best quality? Can you tell me how to avoid buying one that introduces artifacts?

Believe it or not, most DVD recorders have similar image fidelity in the highest-quality 1- or 2-hour recording modes. Both modes produce very clean pictures if you have a clean source.
Even inexpensive units such as the Lite-On 5005 deliver excellent image quality in those modes. The best way to avoid artifacts is to avoid longer play modes, which aren't that useful anyway since blank DVDs are really cheap nowadays.
For our current favorite units, see the top DVD recorders list.
