Specs tell you only part of the story; they can tell you only which models are
supposed to deliver better quality than others. As long as you keep that in mind, here's the single most important camcorder feature to look for:

Three CCDs instead of one.
That's really what separates the pros from the amateurs with respect to video capture quality, because multiple CCDs generally can deliver a broader dynamic range.
I'm not sure what you consider a "hefty" price tag, but the
Panasonic AG-DVC30 is a great prosumer model that you can find online for less than $2,000.
