four 2.1 speakers. The high-end 2.1-speaker field is extremely competitive. None of the sets we reviewed are awful, but our Editors' Choice pick was the Logitech Z-2200 set for its ability to hold its clarity even at higher volumes.
All of those speakers would serve you well for gaming, but for true surround sound, you'd need a 5.1 set. Low-end to midrange 5.1 sets begin at $100 and climb up to $300 or so at the higher end.
If you position even a lower-end 5.1 set correctly, it could give you a better sense of immersion in a game than 2.1 speakers, but for clarity at higher volumes and pure audio quality (not to mention ease of setup), a $100 to $150 2.1 set will treat you better than a similarly priced 5.1 set.
